The European statistical community celebrates European Statistics Day on 20 October. It was initiated by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) and is supported by the European Statistical System (ESS) and the European System of Central Banks.
The 9th European Statistics Day (20 October 2024) will be celebrated under the following motto issued by ESAC: “Official Statistics, a window for understanding society”.
Official statistics are a crucial lens through which we can gain deep and reliable insights into our society. They are vital for evidence-based decisions about the present and the future. For a long time, official statistics have been produced in accordance with the principles of independence, integrity and accountability, using statistical methods that are based on international standards, best practices and scientifically sound approaches and striving for innovation. As trustworthy, high-quality statistics have become a priority for policy-making, the good news is that official statistics are now closer to the citizens than ever before, harnessing the full potential of the digital age. Harmonising Macedonian statistics with Eurostat is a critical step in aligning with EU standards, especially given the country's EU accession ambitions. This process involves a comprehensive alignment of national statistical systems with the European Statistical System (ESS), which is overseen by Eurostat. The State Statistical Office, as part of the European Statistical System, puts enormous efforts to align Macedonian statistics with Eurostat by adopting and implementing EU standards - European Statistics Code of Practice, EU regulations and directives, European classifications, harmonisation of economic statistics, quality assurance mechanisms. This harmonisation process is key for ensuring reliable and comparable data, which is crucial for policy-making and monitoring in the context of EU integration. The State Statistical Office celebrates the European Statistics Day every year, and this year it will do so together with the students from the Goce Delchev University of Shtip, where the Director of the Office, Dejan Stankov, PhD, will give a lecture on the topic “Official statistic, a window for understanding society” and together with the Rector of the University, Prof. Dejan Mirakovski, PhD, will sign a Memorandum of Cooperation that will strengthen and improve the cooperation between the two institutions.
