On 29 January 2014, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the draft resolution A/68/L.36 entitled Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics as they had been originally adopted by the Statistical Commission 20 years ago in April 1994. The Principles were reaffirmed by the Statistical Commission with a new preamble in March 2013 and subsequently endorsed by the Economic and Social Council on 24 July 2013 (Resolution 2013/21). Endorsement by the United Nations General Assembly marks the first time the Fundamental Principles have received such high recognition at the global political level.
