70 years State Statistical Office

The State Statistical Office is celebrating a major anniversary - 70 years from its establishment. In the distant 1945, on 19 May, the Government of the People's Republic of Macedonia of the time founded the Federal Statistical Office, and the date of publication of this Decision – 1 June is celebrated as the Day of Statistics in the Republic of Macedonia.
For 70 years, the Office has been telling the story of the Republic of Macedonia through numbers – relevant, reliable and accessible. For 70 years, generations of statisticians have invested all their knowledge and skills to provide statistics of value to decision-makers in the country, business representatives, households and citizens who dedicate their time and energy to completing statistical surveys.
Therefore, this great anniversary is celebrated with several events - blood donation event, formal academy and gathering of employees, which will take place during this week of the anniversary.
The State Statistical Office continues its commitment for achieving the goals and challenges, aiming for even greater results until the next anniversary.

1945

Establishment of the Macedonian Federal Statistical Office with a decision brought by the Government of Peoples Republic of Macedonia of that time  

 

1946

Adoption of Law on Nationwide Plan for the regulation of the transition of the Office within the competence of the Federal Commission for Planning

1948

Adoption of the Decree for establishment and operation of the Federal Statistical Office and the statistical offices of the Republics (Statistical Office of the Republic)

1948

Carrying out of the first post-war Population Census

1949

Introduction of individual statistical forms in all the towns and subregions for recording of the vital cases (births, deaths and concluded marriages)

184 internal statistical reviews have been produced

The purchase of the first automatic mechanographic machine 

1952

The publication of the first edition of the Monthly Statistical Report

1953

Carrying out of the second post-war Population Census  

1954

The publication of the first Statistical Yearbook of Macedonia

Adoption of the principal Law on Statistics

Purchase of new mechanographic machine with separate appurtenance calculatorwhich had electronic elements and was connected with so-called tabulator

The catastrophic earthquake has disrupted the everyday working and caused casualties among the Office employees

The Statistical Office of the Republic is host of the 7th Meeting of the Statistical Society of Yugoslavia in Ohrid  

1967

The Office has begun with the publication of the edition News releases”, which is the most common form of data publishing even today

Carrying out of the Population Census

Adoption of the Law on Statistical Surveys of interest to the Republic

1975

The purchase of the first computer with internal programming - Burroughs 714, which incorporated a central unit to which the peripheral units, such as magnetic disks, units on magnetic tapes, printers and readers of punched cards, are attached

Carrying out of the Population Census

1991

Installation of a mainframe computer Unisys A within the Government Information Centre in the Statistical Office, which enables significant technological progress in the statistical data processing

1991

Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Macedonia The Office is transformed into state body in the field of statistics and the scope of work and the competences of the Office are increased and intensified

Carrying out of the Population Census

1993

Commencement of international cooperation with the participation in the Conference of the European Statisticians in Paris

1994

Carrying out of the first Census of Population, Households and Dwellings after gaining the independence of the Republic of Macedonia, according to international standards and with international monitoring

1996

Joint Declaration on Statistical Cooperation between the State Statistical Office and EUROSTAT

1996

Macedonia is included in the Phare programme for technical assistance in the field of statistics

1997

Adoption of the Law on State Statistics

1998

Formation of the first Statistical Council by the assembly of the Republic of Macedonia

1998

Adoption of the first Five-Year Programme for the work of the Office for the period 1998-2002

1998

Preparation of the first Projections of the Population of the Republic of Macedonia until the year 2020

2000

Adoption of the Law on Organisation and Work of the State Administrative Bodies ("Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia" No. 58/00) which stipulated renaming of the Statistical Office to State Statistical Office

The State Statistical Office is included in the implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement

Introduction of client/server platform, data migration and establishment of relational databases

Carrying out of the first Global evaluation of the statistical system by EUROSTAT

In the process of harmonisation of the Macedonian with European legislative, the State Statistical Office is manager of the Working Group on Statistics
