Natality in 2009 increased 3.2% compared to 2008


Total number of live births increased
According to the State Statistical Office data, in 2009, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 23 910 births, of which 23 684 live births and 226 still births. In 2009, compared with the previous year, the number of live births increased by 739 children or 3.2%. In the structure by sex, the boys participated with 52.1%, which means 108.8 boys per 100 girls.

Mean age of mothers slightly increased
According to the mothers’ age, most, or 61.5%, were live births to mothers aged 20-29. The mean age of mothers for all live births was 27.7 years and the mean age of mothers for first births was 25.9 years, which represents a slight increase compared to the previous year. Children were most frequently born to mothers from the 1982 birth cohort.

In 33 cases - young mothers, under 15 years of age
It is noteworthy that there was an increase in the number of births among the young female population. In 2009 there were 33 live births to mothers under 15 years of age.

Increased number of illegitimate live births
In 2009, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 2892 illegitimate live births, which represents 12.2% of the total numbers of live births. Compared with the previous year, it was an increase of 3.0%.
