Natality in the Republic of Macedonia, 2017


According to the State Statistical Office data, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 21 946 births in 2017, of which 21 754 live births and 192 stillbirths. In 2017, compared to the previous year, the number of live births decreased by 5.4%. The structure of live births by sex was dominated by boys with 51.3%, which means there were 105.3 boys per 100 girls.

By months, most live births (1 953) were registered in July.

According to the mothers’ age, most (34.7%) were live births to mothers aged 25-29.

The mean age of mothers for all live births was 28.9 years, while the mean age of mothers at first birth was 27.2 years, and the values were the same compared to the previous years.

Children were most frequently born to mothers from the 1988 birth cohort.

In 2017 there were 20 live births registered to mothers aged under 15.

The number of illegitimate live births in 2017 was 2 534, which represents 11.6% of the total number of live births.
