Natality in the Republic of Macedonia, 2016


According to the State Statistical Office data, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 23 199 births in 2016, of which 23 002
live births and 197 stillbirths. In 2016, compared to the previous year, the number of live births decreased by 73 or 0.3%. The
structure of live births by sex was dominated by boys with 51.6%, which means there were 106.6 boys per 100 girls.

By months, most live births (2 165) were registered in September. The mean age of mothers for all live births was 28.9 years,
while the mean age of mothers at first birth was 27.2 years.

According to the mothers’ age, most (34.1%) were live births to mothers aged 25-29.

Children were most frequently born to mothers from the 1987 birth cohort.

In 2016, there were 26 live births registered to mothers aged under 15.

The number of illegitimate live births in 2016 was 2 761, which represents 12.0% of the total number of live births.
