According to the State Statistical Office data, in 2010, a total of 270 308 tonnes of Coal were imported in the Republic of Macedonia, of which: 3 507 tonnes of Hard Coal (Anthracite, Coking Coal, Other Bituminous Coal), 239 917 tonnes of Lignite (Sub-Bituminous Coal, Brown Coal, Lignite, Peat), and 26 884 tonnes of Coke Oven Coke.
The total primary production of Lignite in 2010 was 6 724 351 tonnes.
The gross inland consumption of Lignite was 6 939 146 tonnes, of which 96.43% were used in Public thermal power stations for production of Electrical energy, 0.45% in Autoproducer thermal power stations for production of Heat and Electrical energy, 0.23% in Heating plants for production of Heat and 2.89% for Final energy consumption.
The biggest final consumers of Coal, with 229 973 tonnes, were the industrial sectors, as follows: 3 244 tonnes of Hard Coal, 200 459 tonnes of Lignite and 26 270 tonnes of Coke Oven Coke.
