Violent deaths in 2009 increased by 2.5% compared with 2008

Increased number of violent deaths
According to the State Statistical Office data, in 2009, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 613 violent deaths, which is an increase of 2.5% compared with the previous year. Violent deaths accounted for 3.2% of the total number of deaths. The structure of violent deaths by sex in 2009, like previous years, shows higher male participation with 71.0%. Accidents leading cause of violent deaths
In the total number of violent deaths, accidents ranked first with 68.0%, followed by suicides 27.2% and homicides 4.7%. In the category “accidents”, the group ''transport accidents" was predominant with 25.1% of the total number of violent deaths, followed by ''other external causes of accidental injury'' with 21.7%, and ''falls'' with 10.6%.
In the category ''suicides'', deaths caused by ''hanging, strangulation and suffocation'' were most frequent with 12.6%, while in the category ''homicides'' the dominant cause of death, with 1.6% of the total number of violent deaths, was ''assault by other and unspecified firearm discharge''.
