According to the State Statistical Office data, in 2011, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 527 violent deaths, which is
a decrease of 10.4% compared to the previous year. Violent deaths accounted for 2.7% of the total number of deaths. The
structure of violent deaths by sex in 2011, like previous years, shows higher male participation with 72.7%.
In the total number of violent deaths, "accidents" ranked first with 70.2%, followed by "suicides" with 24.3% and "homicides"
5.5%.
In the category "accidents", the group "other external causes of accidental injury" was predominant with 30.5% of the total
number of violent deaths, followed by "transport accidents" with 21.3%, and "other land transport accidents" with 13.7%.
In the category "suicides", deaths caused by "hanging, strangulation and suffocation" were most frequent with 15.6%, while in
the category "homicides" the dominant cause of death was "assault by unspecified means", making up 2.3% of the total number
of violent deaths.
