According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 552 violent deaths in the Republic of Macedonia in 2013, which is a decrease of 5.5% compared to the previous year. Violent deaths accounted for 2.9% of the total number of deaths. The structure of violent deaths by sex in 2013, as in previous years, shows higher male participation with 73.9%.
In the total number of violent deaths, "accidents" ranked first with 65.9%, followed by "suicides" with 30.8% and "homicides" 3.3%.
In the category "accidents", the group "transport accidents" was predominant with 26.3% of the total number of violent deaths.
In the category "suicides", deaths caused by "hanging, strangulation and suffocation" were most frequent with 18.3% of the total number of violent deaths.
In the category "homicides", the dominant cause of death was "assault by other and unspecified firearm discharge", making up 1.6% of the total number of violent deaths.
