According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 438 violent deaths in the Republic of North Macedonia, which is a decrease by 3.5%, compared to the previous year. Violent deaths account for 1.7% of the total number of deaths. The structure of violent deaths by sex in 2020, as in previous years, shows higher male participation with 72.8%.
In total number of violent deaths, the “accidents” have the highest participation with 70.5%, followed by ,,suicides’’ with 24.0% and ,,homicides’’ with 5.5%.
In the category “accidents,” the group ''other external causes of accidental injury'' was predominant with 43.2% of the total number of violent deaths.
In category “suicides”, the group “hanging, strangulation and suffocation” was most frequent with 16.7% of the total number of violent deaths.
The dominant cause of deaths in the category “homicides” was “assault by unspecified means” making up 3.0% of the total number of violent deaths.
