According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 584 violent deaths in the Republic of Macedonia in 2012, which is an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous year. Violent deaths accounted for 2.9% of the total number of deaths. The structure of violent deaths by sex in 2012, as in previous years, shows higher male participation with 72.8%.
In the total number of violent deaths, "accidents" ranked first with 64.7%, followed by "suicides" with 29.5% and "homicides" 5.8%.
In the category "accidents", the group "other external causes of accidental injury" was predominant with 28.9% of the total number of violent deaths, followed by "transport accidents" with 17.3%, and "other land transport accidents" with 12.5%.
In the category "suicides", deaths caused by "hanging, strangulation and suffocation" were most frequent with 15.9%, while in the category "homicides" the dominant cause of death was "assault by other and unspecified firearm discharge", making up 2.6% of the total number of violent deaths.
