Methodological explanation for the news release:
Water by Sector of Economic Activity
1. Purpose and significance of the survey
The purpose of the survey is to collect data on the exploitation of water resources in industry. The survey collects data on the amount of water supply in industry, the amount of water used for different purposes, amount of discharged wastewater, amount of treated water and the type of wastewater treatment methods.
2. Reporting units and method of data collection
Reporting units in the statistical survey are active enterprises with at least 10 employees classified in the National Classification of Activities - NKD Rev. 2 (harmonised with NACE Rev. 2) in the following Sections: B-Mining and quarrying, C-Manufacturing and D-Electricity, gas, stream and air conditioning supply. The survey is carried out with annual periodicity.
4. Definitions and other explanations
Water abstraction includes the amount of water extracted from ground waters, surface waters or spring waters. Water supply can be done through a public water supply system, own water intake system (the enterprise has own water intake) or through other sources. The amount of water supplied by the enterprise to other enterprises is subtracted and the amount of water obtained by the enterprise from other enterprises is added to the total amount of abstracted water.
Used water is water used in technological processes, for sanitary purposes or any other purposes, in a recirculation system or in a unitary system. The used water can be released in a sewage system or in other water bodies, but it can also be utilised again as recirculated water or as reused water.
Water for technological processes is water used for production and cooling.
Water for sanitary purposes is water used for drinking, for personal hygiene of employees, for cleaning production facilities and in workers’ canteens.
Water for other purposes is water used for washing vehicles, cleaning yards and watering green areas.
Wastewater can be untreated or treated (purified) in industrial treatment plants.
Wastewater from industrial enterprises can be discharged into: the ground (in underground facilities for collecting wastewater, natural basins), in a public sewage system or in surface waters (in watercourses, artificial reservoirs, lakes).
