According to the State Statistical Office data, in 2011, in the Republic of Macedonia there were 19 465 deaths, which
represents an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous year. The structure by sex shows higher male participation,
10 204 or 52.4% of total number of deaths. The number of infant deaths was 172. Participation of infant deaths in the
total number of deaths was 0.9% (per 100 deaths).
The average age of death for males was 69.9 years, while for females it was 74.4 years, which means that women
outlive men by 4.5 years on average.
Like previous years, by (ICD-IX), the highest number of deaths were due to circulatory diseases (I00-I99), making up
59.2% of the total number of deaths, followed by neoplasms (C00-D48) with 18.2%, while 3.9% were deaths due to
endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90), 3.8% were cases where death occurred due to respiratory
system diseases (J00-J99), etc.
