Mortality in the Republic of North Macedonia, by municipality 2020


According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 25 775 deaths in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2020, which represents an increase of 26.0 %, compared with previous year. The structure by sex, shows higher male participation, 13 914 or 54.0% of the total number of deaths. The number of infant deaths was 108. Participation of infant deaths in the total number of deaths was 0.4% (per 100 deaths).

By months, most (3 847) deaths were in November.

The average age of deaths was 71.6 years for males and 75.3 years for females, which means that women outlive men by 3.7 years on average.

Like previous years, by (ICD-IX), most deaths were due to circulatory diseases (I00-I99), which up to 41.6% of total number of deaths, neoplasms (C00-D48) with 15.2%, followed by deaths due to pandemic Covid –19 (U07) with 10.9%, the deaths due to respiratory system diseases (J00-J99) with 5.8%, while with 5.3% were deaths due endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90), 3.7% were cases where death due to nervous system, and the others with lower participation.
