Mortality in the Republic of North Macedonia, 2021

According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 28 516 deaths in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2021, which represents an increase of 10.7% compared to the previous year. The structure by sex shows higher male participation, 15 155 or 53.1% of the total number of deaths. The number of infant deaths was 85, and their share in the total number of deaths was 0.3% (per 100 deaths).
By months, the most deaths (3 212) were registered in April.
The average age of death was 71.6 years for males and 75.2 years for females, which means that women outlive men by 3.6 years on average.
Like previous years, by ICD-IX, most deaths were due to circulatory diseases (I00-I99), making up 35.9% of the total number of deaths, followed by deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic (U07) with 20.6%, neoplasms (C00-D48) with 13.8%, while 5.8% were deaths due to endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90), 4.2% were cases where death occurred due to respiratory system diseases (J00-J99), and other causes of death with lower participation.
