Census of retail trade sale capacities in the Republic of Macedonia,
2016
In 1916, in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Clarence Saunders, an inventor and entrepreneur, opened the first self-service grocery store called Piggly Wiggly. In 2016, after a hundred years of the first opened self-service grocery store, the State Statistical Office conducted the Census of capacities in retail trade, including the census of filling stations. This publication contains data obtained from the Census, in order to present a quantitative picture of retail capacities by various characteristics such as: activity, territorial distribution, location, size of turnover, size of retail space, number of employees, etc. The data from the census could be a solid basis for assessment of the current situation as well as for planning the future development of retail trade, especially for local government, and a basis for creation of local development policies for establishing new standards in terms of retail space needs depending on the number of population.
