Methodological explanation for the news release:


Natality


Statistics of births is based on collection and processing of data for births according to certain demographic, economic, social and other topics.

Statistics of births is a base for producing data for live births and still births and at the same time it determines the natality of one country as a positive component of natural population increase. Statistics of births together with statistics of deaths represents the basic factors that influenced the natural population changes.

Scope

Statistics of births comprise all live births and still births.

Sourse of data

In accordance with the Law on Civil registration, the reporting units are Registrar Offices responsible for Registrar books of births - Ministry of Justice - Department for Civil registration.

Definitions

Live birth - is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception irrespective of the duration og pregnancy, which after such separtion, breathes or shows any other evidence of live, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or placenta is attached.

Still birth (late foetal death) - If a child has been born or taken out of its mother's body without any signs of life (such as hearthbeats or muscule movements), but only if the gestation period was 28 and more weeks.

Attendant at birth - if medical assistance during delivery was provided by physician or qualified midwife the birth is consider being ''with medical assistance''. Otherwise, the birth is considered ''without medical assistance''.

Legitimacy of birth - live births as well as still births were presented by this topic. Legitimate live births consider all live births within marriage proclaimed in compliance with the Act on Family Relations.

Average age of mother at birth of total child - this indicator is a weighted arithmetic mean of the age, which shows how many years in average had mothers at birth (total number of live birth) in one calendar year.

Average age of mother at birth of first child - this indicator is a weighted arithmetic mean of the age, which shows how many years in average had mothers at first birth (first live births) in one calendar year.

Sex ratio for live births - sex ratio for live births in a calendar year is a ratio between the number of male live births and the number of female live births, multiplied by 100.
