Methodological explanation for the news release:

Structure of earnings of employees

The survey is conducted in order to collect data on employment and wage structure in the country. The survey allows to see the relationships between the wages paid to employees, their individual characteristics (sex, age, occupation, length of service, level of education, etc.) and the characteristics of the business entity where the persons are employed (economic activity, size of the business entity and regions).

Data sources and reporting period

The data on the structure of earnings in 2014 were collected with questionnaires, and administrative sources were also used for the first time. Most of the variables were provided from administrative sources, which resulted with significantly reduced burden of the reporting units.
Reference year is 2014.
Reference month is October - this is the month that is considered to have least absences for vacations or holidays.

Observation units
Observation units (reporting units) in the survey are business entities in private and public ownership.

Sample model

The reporting units that are subject to this survey are selected on the basis of a sample, i.e. the sample covers enterprises with activity A – S (according to the National Classification of Activities NACE Rev. 2) and which have ten or more employees. The survey covers at least 70% of employees in each region.

The sampling frame is the updated Business Register. The sample is in two stages. In the first stage the units of observation are enterprises with 10 and more employees (local units are excluded), and in the second stage the units of observation are the employees which are selected from the enterprises according to the payroll.

Definitions

Average gross monthly earning for the reference month (October 2014) covers all payments in cash paid to employees by the employer prior to payment of social contributions and taxes on behalf of the employees. This also includes bonuses for the reference month, payments for over-time work, special payments for shift-work, etc.

Excluded are the payments that do not refer to the reference month (October), bonuses and allowances not paid regularly in any of the pay periods (for example 13th month payment).

Average gross annual earning also covers all non-standard payments which are not paid regularly in some of the pay periods (for example 13thmonth payment, holiday bonuses, quarterly or annual bonuses, etc.), besides the monthly gross earnings.

Average gross earning per hour is the gross monthly earning divided by the number of hours paid for the reference month.
