   According to the State Statistical Office and classification of libraries, there are several types of libraries in the Republic of Macedonia such as: national, libraries within tertiary educational institutions, specialized libraries, non-specialized, libraries-national institutions and public (popular) libraries.

In 2007, compared with 2004, the number of libraries within tertiary institutions was increased by 25.5% due to opening of several new tertiary educational institutions.

The number of public libraries in 2007 compared with 2004 was decreased by 16%, due to closing of local libraries.

In 2007, compared with 2004, libraries within tertiary educational institutions has the highest number of users, and this number was increased by 47.6%, while the number of users of public libraries was increased by 43%.
