On the occasion of the celebration of the European Statistics Day, a Conference of European Statistical Stakeholders (ESAC) took place in Budapest (20-21.10.2016), where the Director General of the State Statistical Office, Ms. Lidija Kostovska, also participated. The Conference gathered together a large number of producers and users of statistical data which represented an opportunity to exchange opinions and experiences in relation to statistical themes from the aspect of both producers of statistical data and the wide range of users: policy makers, business users, journalists, researchers, students.
 
Statistics Austria hosted the 102nd Conference of the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes in Vienna on 26 - 27 September 2016, where the Director General of the State Statistical Office, Ms. Lidija Kostovska, and the Deputy Director General, Mr. Dejan Stankov, participated, as well. This DGINS conference featured a statistical session focusing on the topic of "Statistics on income, consumption and wealth", and an internal session on "Managing a modern NSI in the 21st century”.
 
At the invitation of the Director General of the State Statistical Office, on 5 September 2016, in joint organisation with the Delegation of the European Union, Mr. Pieter Everaers, Director of Eurostat’s Directorate for Cooperation in the European Statistical System; International Cooperation; Resources, visited the State Statistical Office and the other participants in the statistical system of the Republic of Macedonia. At the meeting with the State Statistical Office, Mr. Everaers held talks with Ms. Lidija Kostovska, Director General, Mr. Dejan Stankov, Deputy Director General and the heads of sectors. Discussions were held regarding the progress of Macedonian official statistics in the harmonisation with the statistics of the European Union, as well as the future plans and commitments for further progressive integration of the State Statistical Office in the European Statistical System by strengthening the institution and its coordinating role in national statistical system.

After the meeting with the representatives of the State Statistical Office, Mr. Everaers also had meetings and discussions with the Ministry of Finance, with Finance Minister Mr. Kiril Minoski, with the Governor of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Dimitar Bogov, and Vice Governor Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska, and with the Deputy Minister Mr. Timcho Mucunski, of the Ministry of Information Society and Administration, and it was concluded that the visit was successful and the cooperation continues with increased intensity, as well as that Eurostat completely supports SSO’s work.
 
In the period from 7 to 8 July 2016, in Ohrid, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the Statistical Office of the EU – Eurostat and the State Statistical Office of the Republic of Macedonia (SSO) jointly organised a Workshop on Generic Law on Official Statistics. The workshop was attended by high representatives of the statistical institutions of several countries from Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, who together with their hosts from the SSO discussed the contents of the Generic Law, presented the current solutions in the statistical laws of their countries, exchanged experiences and assessed the need of possible amendments to the Generic Law, i.e. the need of amendments in the national legislation on statistics. The State Statistical Office, as a host, also moderated one of the sessions, and the Director General of the SSO, Ms. Lidija Kostovska, had a presentation, as well. Also participating in the workshop were: Mr. Dejan Stankov, Deputy Director General of the SSO, representatives of the co-organisers of the workshop: Ms. Andrea Scheller, Head of EFTA Statistical Office, Ms. Claudia Junker, Head of Unit for Statistical Cooperation in Eurostat, Mr. Gabriel Gamez, Advisor in the United Nations Statistics Department, as well as other experts.
 
The State Statistical Office was part of the 8th European Quality Conference in Official Statistics held in Madrid, 31 May – 3 June 2016, with a presentation of two expert papers:
  • Data Warehouse for Agricultural Statistics as a tool for standardisation of data processing and improving the quality of EAA calculations, by authors: Mr. Dejan Stankov, MSc and Ms. Ljupka Tasevska, MSc
  • Data Quality Assessment Methods and tools in the SSO – Macedonia, by author: Mr. Dejan Peeski
The National Statistical Institute of Spain and Eurostat organised the Conference. This represents the most important Conference in the domain of the quality of statistical data. The Conference aimed to cover relevant and innovative topics on quality ranging from the challenges and the new paradigm of quality of data for society including big data and multi-source statistics, as well as those linked to the European Statistical System Vision 2020 or the lessons learned from 2013-2015 peer reviews in the European Statistical System. Representatives from more than 50 countries participated in the Conference, and the Scientific Committee was chaired by Mr. Walter Radermacher, Director General of Eurostat, and Mr. Gregorio Izquierdo, President of the National Statistical Institute of Spain.
 
The European Statistical System Modernisation Workshop, organised by Eurostat, took place in Bucharest at the National Statistical Institute of Romania on 16-17 March 2016. During the Workshop different themes were discussed: Sustainability, Big Data, Validation, Integration, National Modernisation Programmes and Dissemination and Users. There were more than98 participantsfrom31 different countries,and more than34 presentations took place at the Conference. The Director General of the State Statistical Office, Ms. Lidija Kostovska, participated in the Workshop, as well.During the Workshop different themes were discussed: Sustainability, Big Data, Validation, Integration, National Modernisation Programmes and Dissemination and Users. At the joint invitation of the Director of the United Nations Statistical Division, the High Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China and the President of the Shanxi Provincial Government of China, the Director of the State Statistical Office, Ms. Lidija Kostovska, with a presentation in the panel discussion: Key Challenges in Monitoring National and Regional Development, took part in the Conference of Countries Along the Silk Road and the International Seminar World Statistics: Sustainable Data for Sustainable Development, China, from 19-22 October 2015. This conference marked the second anniversary of the Worlds Statistics Day. During the Conference, main challenges facing monitoring the development of countries and regions, challenges facing monitoring and measuring social and economic development of countries along the Silk Road, etc. were discussed. The Conference was attended by the Deputy General Secretary of the UN organisation, the Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, Mr. Wang Baoan, the Director of the United Nations Statistics Division, Mr. Stefan Schweinfest, as well as representatives of statistical institutions of 41 countries and 11 international organisations
 
 
At the last joint UNECE/Eurostat session on statistical data confidentiality, held on 5-7 October 2015, in Helsinki, the State Statistical Office applied to be the next host and co-organiser of the session. The UNECE Executive Committee accepted the application and announced that the next session will be held in the Republic of Macedonia. The main purpose of this meeting is to inform about new trends in the protection of statistical data, to exchange experiences between national statistical institutions and universities that carry out statistical surveys in the field of statistical data protection, and best practices and lessons learned in dealing with technical issues related to the confidentiality of statistics. The meeting was attended by representatives of statistical organisations from 30 countries, 6 international institutions and a large number of universities and institutes. The Director General, Ms. Lidija Kostovska and the Deputy Director General, Mr. Dejan Stankov, were representatives from the SSO.
