Mortality in the Republic of Macedonia, 2016


According to the State Statistical Office data, there were 20 421 deaths in the Republic of Macedonia in 2016, which
represents ? decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous year. The structure by sex shows higher male participation,
10 746 or 52.6% of the total number of deaths. The number of infant deaths was 273, and their share in the total
number of deaths was 1.3% (per 100 deaths).

By months, most deaths (2 022) were registered in December.

The average age of death was 70.3 years for males and 74.7 years for females, which means that women outlive men
by 4.3 years on average.

Like previous years, by ICD-10, most deaths were due to circulatory diseases (I00-I99), making up 53.5% of the total
number of deaths, followed by neoplasms (C00-D48) with 19.0%, while 5.5% were deaths due to endocrine, nutritional
and metabolic diseases (E00-E90), 4.1% were cases where death occurred due to respiratory system diseases (J00-
J99), etc.
